Sometimes outside-the-box thinking requires a box

The future of fruit?

The future of fruit?

You may have heard of this before, but square watermelons were back in the news recently as a company in Panama is now getting into the cubed melon business.

It seems outrageous and laughable at first. Even The Simpsons made fun of the idea (check out the video clip below).  But apparently there is a market for square fruit!

Think about it. Somebody in Japan (that’s where square melons started) saw a problem and came up with a very simple solution.

Awkward watermelons are tough to stick in the fridge and probably caused more than a few messes rolling off of store shelves and smashing on the floor.

Have you ever bought a watermelon and heard it rumbling around in your trunk on the way home? You cringe and hope for the best when you pull in the driveway. Maybe the watermelon survived, but it crushed your eggs!

The folks who make these things should really hire me to market their product, huh?

People are willing to pay big bucks for melons that stay put. According to Businessweek.com, square melons from Panama sell for about $75 each!

You could grow your own square watermelons if you wanted. All that you have to do is place a melon in a square container while it’s still growing. It’s that easy! There’s no genetic engineering, no complicated technology, just a plexi-glass box. File this one in the “Why Didn’t I Think of That” category.

I’d be willing to bet, the Japanese farmer who came up with this idea faced some major opposition at first. Investors probably told him his plan was a joke and would never take off.

Eventually, someone took a risk, and it must be paying off since other fruit producers are copying the concept.
