Small businesses have always fueled innovation in this country. But it appears that smaller companies are coming up with fewer big ideas.
Numbers from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office show that the share of patents awarded to small businesses decreased from 30% in 1995 to 20% in 2009.
Is this because the government is failing to support small business innovation, or is it because smaller operations aren’t being as creative and inventive as they used to be? Either way – it’s a disturbing trend.
The actual numbers are even lower than they appear on the surface when you consider that the USPTO considers universities and non-profits to be small entities.

According to the Small Business Administration, small companies produce “13 times more patents per employee than large patenting firms.” Plus – the patents that come from those smaller businesses are twice as likely to have a significant impact.
