Presentation Folders and the Power of Words

by Kasey on September 13, 2010

is the pen mightier?

A picture may be worth 1,000 words, but the pen is mightier than the sword.

In reality – a solid marketing strategy is going to make good use of both the images and the words associated with your small business.

How you blend the colors and pictures along with the words and stories you use in your marketing makes  a big difference.

Let’s take a look at what is the most powerful way to use words to promote you business and sell what you have to offer.

When you order presentation folders from The Folder Store – you’ll have plenty of opportunities to use words to communicate a message, generate interest, establish credibility, and create a recognizable image for your company.

Of course, folders aren’t the only tool where the words you choose can make a difference. There are many other mediums and marketing materials that can benefit from strategic use of words.

But if you can tell a story – you’re already way ahead of the game.

Storytelling

As humans, we’ve been telling stories for thousands of years. Stories are how we relate to each other and the world around us. There is truly no better way to communicate a message.

One of the best ways to use storytelling in marketing is with a blog. Your small business can tell all sorts of stories online because just about anything can be turned into a story. The history of your business, positive customer service experiences, challenges your company has overcome, awards your business has won, a look behind the scenes – the list goes on and on.

When you write a blog (or tell any type of story) the trick is to keep it conversational. The best way to do this is throw out everything you learned in school about good grammar and even punctuation and JUST WRITE. Write like you are talking to your best friend, like you’re explaining something to your nephew, like you’re having a beer with a bunch of buddies.

Now – you’ll probably want to go back and clean things up a little bit. But with blogging – it’s okay to write the way we talk to each other.

Storytelling can also be an effective way to write sales letters and copy like product descriptions. Any time you can weave a real story into your marketing you have a much better chance of capturing the attention and imagination of potential clients and customers.

So how do you use custom folders to tell a story? Is it possible to tell a story on plain old marketing folders? At The Folder Store – we say “heck yeah!” Here’s a made-up example:

A few months ago we wrote about how Subway restaurants went from being a small sandwich shop to the biggest food franchise in the world.

If Subway were to order presentation folders they might print text like this…

From a Single Sandwich Shop to 33,000 locations in 90 countries. Our subs are just that good!

Maybe not the most genius marketing there – but you get the picture. You can tell a story in just a couple short sentences (or a fragment in this case).

When you look at the folder designer
tool on our website, you’ll that you can print text on the front back and inside of your custom presentation folders. Think about how you can use the different parts of folders creatively to tell a story.

We’ll continue to look at the power of words in upcoming posts with topics including the hard sell vs. soft sell, using social media – and much more!
